CONTEMPORARY WEARABLES 21

Biennal Jewellery Award and Exhibition - Toowoomba Region Art Galleries

As the fires of funeral pyres burn in Delhi, an ancient city that has burnt many times before, plundered for its incredible and fabled wealth, my heart breaks for the country of my birth. I remember the magnificence of Delhi when Shah Jehan built the Red Fort and had one of its tablets inscribed with words attributed to the poet Amir Khusrau: 'If there be Paradise on Earth, it is here, it is here, it is here.'
Lest we forget 1 is from a four-piece series. I have used the crucible I use to melt my metals because it is the hub of alchemy by fire. I hope that this plague and catastrophe will change Delhi, India and our whole world. We need to rethink how we live on this very precious and only home we have.
Also, the crucible's shape has always struck me for resembling the arches and arcades lining the Mughals' legendary pavillions and gardens. Creating a miniature garden vista within the crucible's confines made perfect sense. At the back of the piece, hidden from view, is the grim and deadly reality, looking very much like a flower that could be growing in one of the gardens.
